Green Book Writer Deletes His Twitter After Old Tweet Causes Controversy

Green Book writer and producer Nick Vallelonga has deleted his Twitter profile after an old tweet came back to haunt him. Social media has brought people together like never before, but there are some definite consequences when being so connected. Just ask James Gunn, Kevin Hart, and Roseanne Barr about that. Old posts, and even new ones, are starting to have negative impacts on the careers of people in the entertainment industry, and Vallelonga has just found that out the hard way. Vallelonga is the son of Frank "Tony Lip" Vallelonga, who is played by Viggo Mortensen in the movie.

There is some pretty serious Academy Award buzz around Green Book, but many are starting to second guess its chances of winning after one of screenwriter and producer Nick Vallelonga's old tweets has resurfaced. The tweet in question is from 2015, and it's a reply to Donald Trump's claim that he saw Muslims cheering on September 11th as the Twin Towers fell. Trump claims, "thousands and thousands of people were cheering," in Jersey City, New Jersey. In response, Vallelonga had this to say to Trump.

"100% correct. Muslims in Jersey City cheering when towers went down. I saw it, as you did, possibly on local CBS news."

Donald Trump's story, which many believe to be racist, has been disputed numerous times over the years. It seems that Nick Vallelonga may have noticed that there was something off about his support for the story now that he's out promoting Green Book, a movie that he says, "is about people coming together, it's about love." The story breaks down racial barriers and has been praised for doing so during this awards season. However, the Academy might take a step back from honoring the movie, especially after seeing the backlash that the Golden Globes received for honoring Bryan Singer's work on Bohemian Rhapsody. Vallelonga just won a Golden Globe for his writing on Greenbook.

When reached for comment, Nick Vallelonga's representatives simply said, "The Twitter account has been deleted... not sure if any comment is actually needed here." While the account and aforementioned tweet have been deleted, as with anything, it's never really gone from the internet, and it's being spread across social media, with many calling out Vallelonga for hypocrisy. Vallelonga has yet to make a formal statement after deleting his account on January 9th. Last year, star Viggo Mortensen came under fire for using the n-word during a Q&A, but most took his comment out of context.

Green Book is one of the main contenders to win Best Picture at the Academy Awards, though its chances may have come down a bit. The Academy is already trying to deal with the Kevin Hart hosting news and doesn't really need any other controversy going forward. However, that doesn't mean that Nick Vallelonga can't come out with a formal apology for his thoughts on alleged Muslims cheering in the street as the Twin Towers fell. Green Book has recently been called out by the family of Dr. Don Shirley, played by Mahershala Ali in the movie. The family claims that it is "symphony of lies." This story was first reported by Indie Wire.

Nick Vallelonga wrote Green Book. My industry just gave him a Golden Globe for writing. This remains on his timeline.

Mahershala Ali is a Muslim, and a beautiful, generous and kind man.

This is all just too disgusting. pic.twitter.com/LYVbpFZFUL
