Before she was married, it was reported that Meghan Markle went to visit the site of the Grenfell Tower fire multiple times to offer her support to victims of the tragic event. The horrific accident last June, in which a 24-storey apartment block in West London became engulfed in flames, claimed the lives of 72 people. Over a year after the accident, the victims and survivors are clearly still on Markle’s mind because her first solo project as Duchess revolves around the families affected by the tragedy.

The official Kensington Palace Instagram account announced that Markle would be supporting a charity cookbook written by survivors of the accident. The book, titled Together: Our Community Cookbook, features over 50 recipes from women who are living in communities affected by the fire. The recipes are personal and include dishes like Aysha’s Coconut Chicken Curry, Faiza’s Caramel Plum Upside-Down Cake and Sanna’s Shirazi Salad. Proceeds from the book will go towards the Hubb Community Kitchen, a location that has become a kind of refuge for those who escaped the building.

“The Hubb Community kitchen is a place for women to laugh, grieve, cry and cook together. Melding cultural identities under a shared roof, it creates a space to feel a sense of normalcy–in its simplest form, the universal need to connect, nurture, and commune through food, through crisis or job–something we can all relate to,” writes Kensington Palace in an Instagram post. The Telegraph reports that these are words Markle included in the book’s foreword.

The aim is to sell 50,000 copies and raise £250,000 for the community kitchen.

A few early copies of the book were sent out to some of Markle’s closest friends–Serena Williams, included. Williams took to Snapchat to praise the book.

“I couldn’t be more proud of Meghan,” she said in the clip. “I really encourage you all to grab this book, it has wonderful recipes of all women from all backgrounds coming together and just doing something and cooking. Oh, and it’s for a good cause!”

She also showed the book love on Instagram earlier this week.

“I could not be more excited about it and proud of you. It’s beautiful – diversity, inclusivity, coming together in grief or joy – there is just so much love,” she wrote.

We wonder if Williams will try out Markle’s favourite avocado dip recipe.
