Kawhi-apalooza: We knew it was going to be a wild time | The Star

You know how I said the other day that the NBA had figured it out by moving the opening of free agency up to 6 p.m. on June 30 instead of midnight on July 1?

Yeah, well, maybe not.

If it’d been like the old days this might have happened:

You’d all have gone to bed on Sunday night wondering what Kawhi Leonard was going to do, figuring he’d have some meetings or take some calls right off the bat at thee stroke of 12, chatted with some more teams through the day on July 1, probably had another meeting or so on July 2 and then come to some decision on July 3.

Well, that might still be exactly what happens in the end the end. Here it is July 3 and there’s at least some legitimate hope that all the talking and meeting is over and there could be some resolution today.

Just like the olden days.

But, no.

The drunken histrionics of Sunday night sped up the process incredibly and gave this false sense of urgency to get something done right away to keep up with the rest of the league.

So go ahead, blame the NBA, this just shows again that the league hates Canada.

(I joke, I joke. The league does not hate Canada. At least not very much).

Oh, there’s this, too, which we alluded to in yet another story that tried to find a slightly different angle to the non-news aspect of yesterday and if I have to do another one today, I’m going to need some help figuring out what to say so any suggestions are welcome.

Fans here have been spoiled. Completely spoiled.

DeMar didn’t even talk to another team, Kyle was kind of running out of options and his return felt inevitable. The economic times and social media world were so different back in the day of Vince Carter and Tracy McGrady and whoever else that it’s not even worth comparing them in the least.

No, these are uncharted waters around these parts and I don’t know if it’s because people are too used to things getting resolved well and quickly or because there’s never been a player involved with Leonard’s personality or place in the game but, frankly, not everyone I’ve run into his covering themselves in glory waiting for something to get done.

Now …

Get on with your day, something will happen when it happens, the silence surrounding the whole thing is frustrating but not surprising given the player and teams involved and we’ll figure out the fallout from the decision whenever it’s reached.

Besides, I told you Kahwi-apalooza would be like nothing we’d ever experienced, didn’t I?

Riddle me this:

What is so utterly complicated with roundabouts or traffic circles or whatever it is that they call them today that causes so many drivers to lose their freaking minds and drop all sense of driving knowledge.

The things aren’t knew, they aren’t particularly hard to figure out so why is is that every single time I go through one that’s on the street on the west side of Square 1 that some dope either comes to unnecessary stop, tries to cut into traffic that’s coming from the right to nearly cause an accident or that everyone else treats them like they’re some scary Rubic’s Cube of traffic circumnavigation?

I swear, some people!

End o’ mini-rant.

I could probably do 1,000 words one day on the mystifyingly mindless driving habits I see traversing Hazelville every single day.

-

We can thank this Kawhi thing for at least taking a little attention away from the coming Summer League season and, to some of us, that’s not a bad thing at all.

-

So, given all that’s gone on with the Blue Jays this season – and some of the kids are promising but the whole tenor of the year so far seems to be a downer – is the fact Vladdy Jr. is going to be in the Home Run Derby something that excites you?

It’s not like he’s homering left and right in the real games and given the extraordinary amount of hype that preceded his arrival I don’t know that he’s lived up to it, even if that would have been virtually impossible.

But does the Home Run Derby mean anything? Does it prove anything? Will it prove anything? Or is it just a continuation of basically an unfair build-up to a rookie season?

Will you watch?
