Letters to the Editor, Jan. 10

PEACE ON EARTHThe start of the new year brings up within all of us a sense of joy, relief and a great anticipation for new beginnings. People make resolutions and reflect upon their character in the hope to discontinue bad habits going forward. However, even after all the years of changing ourselves to become better, terrorism and violence are still present in today’s world. Many countries in Asia, the Middle East, and even the West have been hit with inhumane acts of brutality and cruelty this past year. Weapons today are so readily available to extremists, and the coming of the new year has never stopped governments and corporations in their greed for economic and political gain, thus there is a dire need for true change. As a Muslim, I especially feel this to be true for the Muslim nations of the world. Hence, I feel more messages such as that of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community’s leader, Mirza Masroor Ahmad, of doing the same to others as we wish unto ourselves, and doing our best to create peace as much as possible, should become part of culture everywhere. It is time to stop calling for change every year and to actually start changing.Usmaan SulemanMaple

(And goodwill toward men)

AFTER THE FOXI have been a Toronto Sun reader for many years, as was my father. It used to be fun. It isn’t any more. I was always aware of your right-wing bias, but over the past year that bias has morphed into a mean, divisive, hate-filled monologue against your political opponents. Several of your columnists have become one-trick ponies, railing against the hated carbon tax in issue after issue until our eyes glaze over. Your lap-dog worship of Doug Ford and everything he does is, well, sickening. You truly have become the Fox News of the North. Congratulations. But I have had enough. Yes, I know, “Thank you for reading.”

SOUR GRAPESIn losing to Finland, reviews of what could have been done to change the outcome now come out. The expert journalists who have never donned more then a pair of double runners will voice their expertise opinion with a lack of experience. But Don Cherry was bang on when he was highly critical of the Canadian junior hockey team after they ran up the score on Denmark 14-0. This attitude came back to haunt them. What he did not mention was how the coaching staff in their “work in progress” did not spend enough time “showing respect for the other team.” Or is that attitude developed when they go back to their respective teams and the teaching their coaches apply? Don Cherry remarked: “Hockey gods will always come back and get you.” Nothing more need be said.
