Canada opens Women’s World Cup with win over Cameroon

MONTPELLIER — It was the start Canada wanted and one it’s never had in a World Cup they did not host.

Kadeisha Buchanan scored in the final minute of the first half to give Canada a 1-0 win over Cameroon in its opening game of the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup in front of 10,710 at the Stade de la Mosson on Monday.

It’s the first time Canada has won its opening match of the tournament in a foreign country, and it puts them into an early lead in Group E. New Zealand and the Netherlands, the other two teams in the group, open against each other Tuesday in Le Havre.

“I thought Cameroon did a great job of keeping it compact and making it difficult for us,” Buchanan said in the post-game media conference. “We did very well being patient and opening up their defence and seeing if we could either go around or in between them. I think we have room for improvement, but I think we did well keeping them on their toes.”

Buchanan scored in the 45th minute after a mistake by a Cameroon defender put goalkeeper Annette Ngo Ndom under pressure from Canada striker Nichelle Prince, who was able to win a corner.

Janine Beckie lofted the corner kick to the far post where Buchanan rose above everyone and headed the ball down to the ground and into the net. It was Buchanan’s first World Cup goal and fourth internationally — three, of which, have come on headers.

“It was a great cross from Janine, she has been putting them in very well this game,” Buchanan said. “I just felt the space backdoor and I just needed to get a head on it. It was a great delivery and I just needed a touch. I was very happy with my first World Cup goal.”

Cameroon made their intentions clear starting the game with five defenders and a holding midfielder just in front of their back line.

Cameroon’s game plan was to defend en masse and to try to hit Canada on the counterattack with speedsters Ajara Nchout and Gabrielle Aboudi Onguene taking turns playing up top as the lone striker.

To its credit, Canada was patient and careful not to get caught shorthanded at the back while they looked for their goal. After shaking off the nerves in the first 15 minutes, Canada began to take control of the contest.

“It (five defenders) caught us a little bit off guard,” said Canadian head coach Kenneth Heiner-Moller. “We’ve seen six or seven of their matches and they haven’t played a back-five. But looking at their lineup and them having three centre backs in the starting lineup, we talked about it just as the players went out that they could be a back-five.

“It’s a great thing to experience this early in the tournament. It’s hard to break down, but when we lost the ball, they didn’t have a lot of players up high. So to the (Cameroon) crowd it may have felt like they were close to getting something, but really there wasn’t.”

Canada had 69% of the possession in the half and finished with 65% for the game. Canada completed 469 pass to 101 for Cameroon and had 16 attempt on goal to five.

“Canada is fifth when we look at the rankings for women’s teams and we are 46th,” said Cameroon head coach Alain Djeumfa. “We were going in as underdogs, we needed to go in, we needed to try and hit them on the counter attack. But from a tactical point of view, I think we were still able to get into the game and I think that our structure and I think our organization and the way our formation worked was very good, but unfortunately, we found ourselves in some sticky situations.”

Prior to scoring the goal, Canada did manage to create a number of quality opportunities, but lacked that final touch.

In the second half, Canada looked a more relaxed group and were in control of the game, keeping possession in an effort to break down Cameroon again.

Up a goal, there was less urgency in Canada’s play, but it forced Cameroon to venture forward, something they rarely did in the first half.

Cameroon did come close with just over 25 minutes to play as Claudine Meffometou was able to get to a corner at the back post, but unlike Buchanan, was unable to get her header on target, bouncing it just wide.

“These first games are always the most difficult, at least in the times I’ve played in tournaments like these,” said Canadian captain Christine Sinclair. “It’s a little hectic, chaos, and with the way Cameroon plays, they’re very physical and they kind of man-mark completely different than we’re used to. But I’m proud of our team, I don’t think Steph (goalkeeper Stephanie Labbe) had to make a save, which is a nice way to play a game.

It would have been nice to put a couple more in, but we’ll take the three points (for win).”

Canada play New Zealand in their second group game Saturday in Grenoble.
