Gunman sought after school shooting in Scarborough

Toronto Police are looking for a gunman after a shooting inside a Toronto school for adult learners on Wednesday.

Officers received a call for gunfire at the Scarborough Centre for Alternative Studies, on Midland Ave. north of Danforth Rd., around 11:50 a.m.

Two males at the school got into a fight and during the altercation, one fired a shot at the other, causing a bullet graze to the victim’s arm, police said Thursday.

The gunman ran off and was seen northbound on Midland Ave.

Toronto Police media officer Gary Long said investigators are still trying to piece together whether the two men know each other.

Toronto District School Board spokesman Shari Schwartz-Maltz confirmed the shooting took place in the front foyer. The school was put in lockdown from 11:45 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. as police investigated. There were no other injuries to students or staff.

The school teaches mature students aged 18 to 20 in Grades 10 to 12, with approximately 1,600 registered students. There are 66 cameras onsite, which police are combing through, as well as CCTV footage in the neighbourhood.

Schwartz-Maltz said there were social workers at the school Thursday for anyone who needed counselling.

The gunman is described as black, 19-20 years old, about 5-foot-6, with a slim build. He was last seen wearing a white T-shirt, black Adidas jacket, dark grey low-riding jeans, and white shoes.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 416-808-4100 or Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS.
